Little did I dream when I attended a meeting in St. Mary's Hall in Clonmany twenty-five years ago for the express purpose of organising a two-day parochial sports, that the nucleus of Clonmany Festival would evolve. The simple idea of the sports was rapidly expanded on until the first Clonmany Festival programme emerged in all its glory .The brains behind this extravaganza were the combined talents of Marius Harkin and Jim Toland who masterminded this annual event for the incubatory period. It therefore gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome back to officially open our twenty-fifth anniversary festival these two stalwarts without whom this long standing family event would not have been possible.
Clonmany Festival is somewhat unique in that it has always catered for the entire family with something on offer for all age groups and a wide variety of tastes. Although this years festival promises to be a bumper event, sadly this tradition may soon be no more as the present committee had been in office for at least ten years and are anxious to hand over the reigns to a new generation. If its future is to be guaranteed new blood is urgentlv needed.
I would like to avail of this opportunity to sincerely thank all past directors, committee members. helpers and especially our sponsors whose generosity makes this annual event possible. Also a special word of thanks to the two Hotels in Ballyliffin and to Fr . Morris for the use of their facilities and without whose invaluable co-operation we would have been unable to survive. Special credit to Fahan Sea Angling Club who over the years have run the two day angling events which has always been a high point of the progamme.
Best wishes to this years directors -Danny McCarron and Paidin Doherty who have provided an action packed week of entertainment. I would also like to offer best wishes to Clonmany Sheepdog Association who likewise are celebratlng their silver jubilee.
Lastly. special praise is due to the editor of this publication -Phelim Davenport who undertook this mammoth task at very short notice. Thanks to all our readers who have helped in your own small way by purchasing this anniversary booklet and I hope you will join us in our celebrations.
