Fairs
Long ago fairs were the same as they are now but they were held in different places. In our parish the fair was held in Ballyliffin. Now it is held at the Cross. Sometimes men would go around the houses buying cattle, horses and pigs and other animals. Other times the men would take the animals to the fair and sell them. When they would be making a bargain they would slap each others hands. When a man would be selling a horse and having winkers on it the man he would be selling the horse to would have to pay for the winkers or not take them at all Mary Devlin, Dresden, Clonmany, 12th July 1938
