Placenames Magheranaul was once part of a quarterland known as Ballymagehan pre Ordinance suvey. It is a small townland on the south edge along shore of Trawbreaga, 200' above sea level. Two thirds of the land is arable and the rest is rough hill grazing. It consists of four villages or parts; Beltra; Magheranaul; Balloor (Baile Úr) and Ballymagehan (Baile Mhic Ghaoithin).
