Friday 5th July

7.45pm Patrick Kavanagh Memorial Lecture

Seamus Heaney, Nobel Laureate "Who owned that half a rood?" The title comes from 'Epic', the Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh's celebrated poem. Seamus Heaney will extend the exploration of 'the borders, boundaries and divisions' theme.

8.30pm Opening of Art Exhibition by Marie Heaney

8.45pm An Evening of Poetry and Music with Seamus Heaney and Tommy Sands. Later: Inishowen Singers in McFeeley's Bar with fear an tí Jimmy McBride

This talk will focus on some of the many ways in which women have challenged and transgressed the boundaries of society's norms to empower themselves and others.

11.30am A Home Fit for Hitler? - British Black Propaganda and Ireland in the Second World War.

Prof. Eunan O'Halpin

Discussion of activities intended to influence Irish and American opinion in favour of Irish participation in the defence of the British Isles.

12.20pm Forts Dunree and Leenan - Sentinels of the Swilly

Col. Brian O'Reilly

A review of the stragetic value of Lough Swilly and the evolving developments for its defence through the years and their impact on the local people.

9.00pm Concert of Traditional Irish Music and Song with Seamus Gibson (fiddler), Dermot Toland (guitar) and friends.

Songs across the Border sung by Grace Toland, Jim Mc Farlene, Derry and Sean Mone, Keady, Co. Armagh.

Sunday 7th July

11.30am Visit to the ruin of McGlinchey's homestead in Meentiagh Glen.

2.00pm From Lough Foyle to the Bismarck Sea

Reflections on Inishowen and North West during
World War II

Although neutral in the Second World War, Irishmen and women died as service personnel in the British or Allied forces, as civilians in British cities and as merchant seamen.

3.00pm The Setting up of the Border from the Customs point of view Mr.Paddy Ryan

3.30pm Stories of Smugglers and Smuggling Mr. Pat Mc Nally

4.00pm The Emergency Turf Campaign

Mr Paddy Doherty B.E.

The role of the council, road building, the production and quality of turf, the weather, the method of payment and transport will be covered.

7.30pm Local Experiences during World War II

Panel Discussion with Local Speakers

9.00pm On the Shovel by Ultan Cowley

Narrative with musical accompaniment based on the experiences of the Irish Navvy in the UK.

All events will be held in St. Bridget's Youth Club, Clonmany (unless otherwise stated).
