Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17th September, 2000
For Jewish people, in Roman times, the cross was a symbol of hardship and cruelty. They also thought that crucfixion was a shameful death. Jesus knew that He would die on the cross. Jesus used the idea of carrying the cross as a way of showing people that they could put up with anything for His sake. When we have troubles we often say that they are a hard cross to bear, but with Jesus' help we can get through them. Dear Lord, please help me to carry my cross.
Thought for the week To receive the sacrament of penance, three things are necessary; for Faith by which we discover God present in the priest, the Hope that makes us believe that God will give us the grace of forgiveness, Charity which leads us to love God and which puts in our heart the regret that we have offended him.
