Today is World Day of the Sick - St. Benedict,
who in the sixth century provide the basic rule for Western monasticism,
wrote: 'Before all things and above all things care must be taken of
the sick, so that they may be served in every deed as Christ himself..
But let the sick on their part consider that they are being served for
the honour of God, and not provoke their brethren by their unreasonable
demands. Yet they should be patiently borne with, because from such
as these is gained a more abundant reward.'
St. Valentine was a priest and a doctor who lived in Rome
during the 3rd. century. He was martyred for his faith on February 14,
269. In the year 350 a church was built over his grave. In the middle
ages the leg- end grew and birds paired on his feast day. Then the custom
of sending anonymous "Valentines" or tokens of affection began. St.
Valentine's relics are kept in Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin. So,
who will be your Valentine?
