This Sunday we honour St. John the Baptist He was born
some weeks before Jesus, who was his second cousin. Mary, the Mother
of Jesus, had visited her cousin Elizabeth before John was born and
their meeting gave rise to the beautiful greeting known as THE MAGNIFICAT.
St. John was the last of the prophets. He foretold the coming of Jesus,
the Messiah, whose sandals he felt unworthy to tie. He baptised Jesus
in the River Jordon, starting His public ministry. Later Salome persuaded
King Herod to have John killed when he spoke again of the king's bad
behaviour. Lord, my God, may I love with sincerity, hate what is evil,
and cling to what is good. May I be joyful in hope, patient in affliction
and faithful in prayer. Amen.
