In today's Gospel the parable of the Good Samaritan tells of a person who is prepared to go out of his way to help another. In the time of Jesus it was extremely unusual for a Samaritan to help a Jew or for a Jew to help a Samaritan. The story tells how sometimes one person reaches out to help another in time of need. It is significant that Jesus concludes his story with a different question: Which of the three made himself neighbour? It is as if he said: do not try to figure out who is your neighbour, listen rather to the call from within you, and become a neighbour, be close to your sister and brother in need. As long as we see the comand to love as an obligation, we are not loving as God wants. We should try to follow this example if we want to be truly Christian.

Kindness

Kindness is a virtue given by the Lord.
It pays dividends in happiness
And joy in its reward.
For, if you practice kindness
In all you say and do,
The Lord will wrap his kindness
Around your heart and you.
And wrapped within his kindness
You are sheltered and secure
And under his direction
Your way is safe and sure.
