Today's psalm - Psalms are prayers. Not just private whispers, but prayers meant to be sung aloud. The Responsorial Psalm picks up some theme from the readings and makes a song about it. Hope is the mood today. Hope, the virtue of Advent is the courage to persevere in faith even when the signs indicate nothing but major problems ahead. The reason for hope is trust in the unswerving love of God: It is he who keeps faith forever. The repeated prayer-word for Advent is Come. As long as you can say Come to somebody, you have hope. Isaiah says that God is coming. The amazing thing is that the vengeance of God is not about punishing people but about saving us. John the Baptist expected fires of retribution. He was taken aback at when he heard about Jesus. Bread for the hungry, liberation, new sight, divine protection, and justice for the downtrodden! It calls for a song: Come, Lord, and save us.
