The Inishowen Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of Ireland. I have often referred to it as the forgotten Peninsula because it does not get the attention that it deserves. The hospitality of its people is overwhelming. The beauty of its distinctive and varied scenery is stunning.

The northernmost tip of Ireland is there - Malin Head. Close by is the small town of Ballyliffin about which I am writing. It nestles beneath towering mountains and beautiful hillsides. It overlooks Pollan Bay and has a wonderful lengthy beach. The ruins of Carrickabraghy Castle are at the end of the bay and Glashedy Rock sits just off the coast. History and beauty are central to Inishowen.

The air is reputed to be the freshest and purest in the world. It comes straight from the Atlantic. As a child I visited Ballyliffin often, amazed by its beauty and the variety of its weather as we wandered on its hills or beaches.

If you visit Inishowen I hope you will make time to explore the countryside. You will see signs directing you to the Inis Eoighan 100 (or lnishowen 100); this is a gloriously scenic drive that guides you around the Peninsula and is Donegal's version of the Ring of Kerry. Malin Head is a spectacle in itself and if the journey through the Gap of Mamore doesn't blow your mind then the view down over five finger Strand from Knockarnany Bens probably will.

Fishermen love the Inishowen Peninsula. The salmon are plentiful. So are golfers. There are a handful of courses in Inishowen, all of which are well worth a visit but I suspect many players may find it hard to tear themselves away from Ballyliffin. ..after all, there are now 36 very special reasons for staying.
