Ballyliffin Golf Club
Golden Jubilee Commerative Booklet 1947 - 1997
GOLFING history was made on last Monday night when Ballyliffin Golf Club completed the purchase of 377 acres of land for development as a new course.
Founded in 1947, Ballyliffin is renowned as one of the most hospitable clubs in Donegal. Its open competitions invariably command excellent support.
In the knowledge that the lease of the present 9 hole course was due to expire in July, 1972, the Council decided last year that new ground should be purchased. Protracted negotiations followed and these were completed on Monday. The land on which the new course will be laid out is part of the town-land of Ballymacmoriarty adjacent to the old course on the seaward side. In the opinion of the experts the site is ideal for the creation of the a first class 18 hole course of championship standard and it is the intention of the Ballyliffin Council to provide just that, complete with a modern Clubhouse containing all facilities.
With the establishment of the new course Ballyliffin should take its place among the leading golf clubs in the country. A well known firm of golf architects will design the layout.
This mammoth venture by a relatively small club involves heavy expenditure. The initial purchase money is to be raised on the form of a loan - in units of £20 and multiples of same to a maximum of £200 per person. There is to be a guaranteed annual dividend. Those interested in supporting the project may obtain details from any officer of the club.
At a council meeting on Tuesday night the members of the negotiating committee- Messrs Clement Sweeney. Martin Hopkins. James McLaughlin. P. J. Kerr and Joe Masterson - were complemented on the excellent job of work they had done.
