This
Club and its members have always been very close to my heart and I
therefore felt very honoured to be invited to serve as Lady President
for this, Ballyliffin's Golden Jubilee year.
I have been involved with the Ballyliffin Golf Club
for a long number of years now. I started playing golf in the early
60's. In those days there was no Clubhouse, we used what was known
as the "smoke room" in the Strand Hotel. I can assure you that many
a good evening was had there. I was introduced to the game by my late
husband Martin, a devoted and active member of the Club since the
very early days. Martin served the Club faithfully as both Captain
(1963- 1964) and President (1989- 1991 ), I feel very proud of my
husbands achievements and Martin's contribution to the Club was acknowledged
when he was made an honorary member in 1995.
In 1965 it was decided to form a Ladies Branch. I was
present a the first meeting in Tullys Hotel, Carndonagh. I have witnessed
many changes at this Club since then. Ballyliffin Golf Club has gone
from strength to strength and I am confident that the good work will
continue.
I would like to thank my fellow golfers and especially
the Ladies Branch of Ballyliffin Golf Club for the support and assistance
they have given me during my term as Lady President. I look forward
to serving Ballyliffin Golf Club in the future.
Finally, Walter Hagen and I are often accused of having
the same philosophy on life; "I never wanted to be a millionaire;
I just wanted to live like one," Let me commend to you his advice
on the game of golf; "Never hurry, never worry and be sure to smell
the flowers along the way ."
